Description: 1854-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar, NGC Genuine, salvaged treasure from shipwrecked S.S. Republic, October 1865. If you have desired to own once-lost treasure, this is such an item, thanks to effective salvage and treasure recovery efforts from the S.S. Republic wreck. The Republic, a new name for a sidewheel steamer after several before and during the Civil War, departed New York City in its final role, transporting passengers and $400,000 in crated gold and silver coins to support New Orleans' postwar market. One might recall a similar effort the Spaniards undertook in 1784 to resupply New Orleans for the same purpose, with Pieces of Eight and other Real coins. The Republic encountered and eventually did not survive a hurricane off Georgia, and sank in about 1,700 feet of water. In 2003, the wreck was found and salvage operations started; about 1/3 of the treasure has been recovered so far. Many specimens have been turned into grading services for documentation, and this is one of them: not graded, and the seawater "shipwreck effect" is evident as damage on both sides. But this coin is a survivor from decades in a crate at the ocean's bottom, and exists today as a collectible. A numismatist (or historian) may enjoy this coin and the story that goes with it!
