ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Edward Radclyffe (1809–1863) after a picture by William Henry Bartlett (March 26, 1809 – September 13, 1854). The well known artist William Henry Bartlett produced many pictures used for engravings and died of fever on board of a French ship off the coast of Malta returning from his last trip to the Near East, in 1854. PROVENANCE: This print was published in "The Pictorial History of Scotland from the Roman Invasion to the Close of the Jacobite Rebellion, A.D. 79 to 1746.", by Virtue & Co of City Road and Ivy Lane in London. TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good. Suitable for framing. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Today this bridge carries the A1107 over Pease Dean, a deep gully south east of the village of Cockburnspath, N.W. of Eyemouth, Berwickshire. The A1107 was formerly the main Edinburgh to Berwick-on-Tweed turnpike, now bypassed by the A1. The bridge was built 1783-1786 and has four tall semicircular arches, varying in span from 42 ft to 56 ft. 300ft (91.5m) long, 16ft (4.9m) wide and 120ft (36.5m) high.This bridge at the time of opening was the highest bridge in the world at 130 feet above the water below.
