Description: Sketch I Showing the Progress of the Survey in Section No. IX [Galveston Bay to Corpus Christi Bay] Nice example of a mid-19th century U.S. Coast Survey triangulation chart (dated 1861) issued at the beginning of the Civil War showing the Texas coast from Laguna Madre to Galveston Bay. Map shows from Laguna Madre at left to Galveston Bay at right with Matagorda Bay at center. Shows many townships including Corpus Christi, Galveston, Matagorda, Lamaar, Espiritu Santo and a partial route for the Arkansas and Mazatlan railroad. Shows detailed triangulation work, including various types of stations, and quite a bit of of coastal detail. The chart was produced under the supervision of A. D. Bache, Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey (and grandson of Benjamin Franklin). Condition: Folding chart in good antique condition, nice impression on sturdy, mildly age-toned paper, slightly darkened along the folds.
