1868 Grant & Colfax: Impressive Election Campaign Shadow-Box Jugate Display.

Description: 1868 Grant & Colfax : Impressive Election Campaign Shadow-Box Jugate Display. Gem example of one of the best display pieces issued for the 1868 campaign. This is the best example for condition I have ever seen. Purchased at Heritage Auctions for $4780 in their May 2012 political memorabilia auction. Copper three-dimensional busts of Washington, Lincoln, Grant and Colfax are mounted on velvet ground, within plain brass frames. This all against an oval steel plate elaborately engraved with designs and campaign slogans. The piece was copyrighted and produced by R. H. Norris of Paterson, New Jersey. It appears to have been produced during the presidential campaign, even though it confidently states "Elected 1868 Novr. 3rd". The oval engraved plaque measures 9" x 11" and is recessed with a mahogany liner or spandrel with gold stamped designs. The frame is 16" x 18". This is one of the most unique, substantial, and elaborately produced campaign items ever made for any campaign. As noted above, this 1868 Grant & Colfax campaign shadow-box was purchased by myself at Heritage Auctions in May 2012 (Lot #38131) and at that time sold for $4780. The most recent example to come to auction at Heritage since was a far lesser-condition example offered in June 2018 that sold for $7187 (Lot 43294) and that does not remotely compare to the value and condition of this high-grade example.
