The Mexican Border Service Medal was authorized in 1918 to recognize the service of thousands of National Guard troops federalized for the Mexican War and serving on the Mexican Border from 1916 to 1917. This medal was awarded to personnel serving on the Mexican Border who did not qualify for the Mexican Campaign Medal.
