Description: 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair - Christian Science Monitor Building: A Century of Progress International Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair, was a world's fair held in the city of Chicago, Illinois, United States, from 1933 to 1934. The fair, registered under the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), celebrated the city's centennial. Designed largely in Art Deco style, the theme of the fair was technological innovation, and its motto was "Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Conforms", trumpeting the message that science and American life were wedded. Its architectural symbol was the Sky Ride, a transporter bridge perpendicular to the shore on which one could ride from one side of the fair to the other. The Christian Science Monitor pavilion, just south of the Science Palace and on the west bank of the lagoon, represents the only newspaper to have had its own building at the exhibition. In the Foyer, a mural illustrates the production and distribution of the Monitor, and you also have the complete collection of the Christian Science Monitor magazine and other Christian Science books, as well as reproductions of letters from Mary Baker Eddy. Beyond the exhibition hall is a typical Christian Science reading room, as can be found in many cities, and its ideal location, overlooking the lagoon, makes it welcoming and relaxing.
