Developed to pave the way for Porsches entry into the European Grand Touring Championshipafter the FIAs limitation of factory prototypes to just 3.0 litres of displacement and the sudden obsolescence of the 917the Carrera RS (Rennsport) was born as a homologation special. The distinctive ducktail rear spoiler reduced rear-end lift at speed, while the standard 2.4 lire 911 S engine was bored out to 2.7 litres, producing 210 BHP at 6,300 RPM, with 188 foot-pounds of torque at 5,100 RPMplenty of performance of a whittled-down model that weighed in at just 2,375 lbs (1,075 kg). The Carrera RS 2.7 was introduced at the 1972 Paris Auto Show, and all 500 planned production cars were sold out almost immediately.
