Description: The 2001-D United States Buffalo Silver Dollar is a commemorative silver dollar issued by the United States Mint in 2001. National Museum of the American Indian Commemorative Coin American and Buffalo nickel, this currency served as the basis for the design of the dollar. The buffalo design on the coin is derived from Black Diamond, a 1,550-pound bison found at the Central Park Zoo in New York in the early 1900s. Therefore, the actual image on the coin depicts America's buffalo design compared to the buffalo. However, for decades this historical concept has been recognized and accepted under the nomenclature buffalo.Obverse Design: The delicate and attractive design on the obverse of the 2001 Buffalo dollar depicts the coming together of three different Indian chiefs who played the role of James Earle Fraser in the early aughts of 1900. These three leaders were artists in the Wild West shows in New York. They initially worked as models for Fraser. The combination of the three chiefs in the design includes Chief Iron Tail, Chief Big Tree and Chief Two Moons.Reverse Design: Reverse Design depicts the same distinctive and nostalgic design used for Type 1 Buffalo Nickels in 1913. Type 1 Buffalo Nickels feature a buffalo standing atop a mound. The reverse design of the 2001 Buffalo Commemorative Dollar has been slightly modified from the original buffalo nickel design.
