THE OBVERSE The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide but "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, where the Queen's portrait by Vladimir Gottwald was fifth). The Queen also wears the Coronation Necklace; originally made for Queen Victoria in 1858, it was also worn at the coronations (as Queen's Consort) of Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother) in 1937. Unlike on British coinage, the effigy is "uncouped" (includes the Queen's shoulders). In small letters on the left, the artist's initials JC (for Jody Clark). Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2oz 9999 Ag 2021 2 DOLLARS. The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "2oz 9999 Ag" means "two troy ounces of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum. The portrait of the Queen is smaller than normal and is in a circle in the lower part of the obverse. In a small shield above, the crowned portrait of King Edward VII facing right (the first Australian florins were issued in his name, and had his portrait on the obverse). The background is frosted. THE REVERSE The reverse features the Ensigns Armorial of the Commonwealth of Australia, as authorised by Royal Warrant 7th May 1908. At centre, simple shield enclosing a cross of Saint George on which are five six-pointed stars, around the outside of which are six small escutcheons (small shields). The shield is supported by a kangaroo and an emu standing on a grassy mound. Above the shield a crest, the seven-pointed star of Federation on a wreath and on a ribbon at the base, the motto ADVANCE AUSTRALIA is inscribed. Around above, the value and denomination ONE FLORIN - TWO SHILLINGS; below, between arrow heads, the date (of the original florin) 1910. The background is frosted. The 2021 issuance of the 2 oz florin is a new coin struck by Australia's renowned Perth Mint. The florin is an ancient coin, first issued in 1344 by England's King Edward III. For over 600 years, a florin was worth two shillings in England's old monetary system (240 pennies per pound sterling). As a Commonwealth nation, Australia started minting its own florins in 1910 and stopped in 1963 when the English currency system was simplified (or "decimalized" to today's 100 pennies per pound sterling denominations). The shield includes the Cross of St. George and a representation of the Southern Cross, the constellation once used by settlers navigating the ocean towards Australia. The date 1910 appears on the reverse as well, referring to the year Australia minted its first florin.
