Description: Lovely antique hand engraved 800 silver pill/trinket/snuff box with hand painted miniature scene depicting a courting couple outdoors (man holding a birdcage). Some informal research (internet) on these type of boxes explains that the artists that hand painted these boxes often copied paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is possible (but not confirmed!) that the miniature scene on this box is inspired by a painting by French painter Nicholas Lancret ca. 1740 titled “Birdcage.” Lovely ornate engraving on all sides. The exterior and interior of box appears gold in color so may be vermeil-not confirmed. Stamped on the inside bottom with “Made in Italy” and “800” (in lozenge). Also stamped on both top and bottom with what appears to be number “11” or possibly two small “v’s”-meaning of these marks not known. The box measures approximately 1.5” in diameter and .5’ high. The box opens easily with two offset tabs and stays tightly closed. Overall in good condition with minor scratches and wear and tear consistent with vintage item. Please see photos for details (note some photos are magnified for better viewing of details) and message me with any questions as I do not accept returns. Thanks!
