Description: This Austin Reed antique black silk top hat was mostly likely created between 1900-1917. Crafted from what appears to be silk plush with directional nap, a black grosgrain ribbon trims the brim and a black wool felt band finishes the hat. This topper has a leather sweatband and is lined in satin and silk. The lid is printed with Austin Reed, 13 Frenchchurch St., 5a St. Mary Axe., London, E.C. Austin Read was listed in the National Archives in 1915 at both those addresses. In 1917, the postal districts were divided into sub districts so the address would not have been listed as only E.C. after that year. Flat crown: Approximately 7 3/4" front to back, 6 3/4” side to side Head opening: Approximately 7 1/2" front to back, 6 1/2" side to side Crown height: 6 1/4" Band width: 1 1/2" Hat size: Inner sweatband circumference approximately 22” - 22 1/4"; it has been measured to the best of my ability but please refer to photographs for measurements.
