Description: 1942 official company mail from Pan American-Grace Airways, Inc. (Lima, Peru) sent via airmail to the company's office in New York, NY, USA. The letter, marked "PRIVATE," was sent from Balboa in the Canal Zone to NYC. It is postmarked with a cancellation clearly reading Apr. 8, 1942 at 12 p.m. and is franked using two 15c (Scott CZ C10) stamps. It is a Very Fine WWII-era piece ready to enhance any collection of U.S. Possessions. As background, Pan American-Grace Airways, better known as Panagra, was an airline formed as a joint venture between Pan American World Airways and Grace Shipping Company. Founded in 1929, Panagra's network stretched from Panama and the U.S.-controlled Panama Canal Zone to Santiago, Chile and Buenos Aires. It was quite a successful enterprise and held a quasi-monopoly over air travel in parts of Colombia and South America during the 1940's and 1950's. Ultimately, Panagra merged with Braniff International Airways in 1967, thereby losing its separate identity.
