Crinum Lily, Caribaeum, large blooming-size bulb

Description: DESCRIPTION: Caribaeum is a very tiny crinum, the next to smallest that we grow (Bayou Traveler and Oliganthum are the smallest). Plants do not grow more than 12" tall for us and they multiply rapidly by short, underground stolons ("stoloniferous" - like thick roots) that extend several inches out from the base of a bulb and then eventually turn upwards emerging as a new leaf several inches away from the mother bulb. In a natural, tropical setting these can grow as tall as 18-24". The stolon eventually forms a bulb with its own roots beneath the new leaves. It can be mildly invasive as it will spread into nearby plants after several years, but it does not spread very rapidly and is very easy to dig out and transplant. This is very similar to crinum oliganthum a species bulb but it grows slightly larger and we have observed as many as 4 flowers (it reportedly can have up to 6) instead of the 1 to 3 flowers of oliganthum. Flowers are white in an open star shape with six thin petals as shown in the photos. They like a very wet environment, and often form large, marble-size seeds. This and oliganthum are closely related to crinum americanum and the Amazon Bason erubescens but are miniature versions. We have had them bloom June through November. These are very tiny bulbs and grow no larger than a fingernail (1/2-1" in diameter) when mature after 3-4 years. Mature bulbs will form several offsets each year and they can rapidly multiply to fill a pot or a square foot of the garden Our crinum collection has over 1000 varieties. These bulbs can live for decades, and this particular bulb will be a prize in your collection in a few years. BACKGROUND: We received our bulb from another Florida collector who received it from a lady in Alabama. We have no other background information on the bulb. Whether or not this is actually the species bulb, Caribaeum, we cannot say for sure, but it appears to be. GROWING CONDITIONS: This bulb will thrive in full sun and is well suited for growing in a pot or container with no drain holes. We grow ours in large black, motar mixing tubs in very heavy soil. It can be grown as an aquatic as long as there is no more than 2-3" of water above the bulb. Bayou Traveler (Oliganthum) is closely related to a very similar bulb we offer called Caribaeum which is just slightly larger. The leaves stay green all year here in northeast Florida, zone 9. It is very hardy and easy to grow requiring no special care. It will tolerate extended dry periods and will take freezing temperatures at least down to the high teens. This would make an excellent container plant in colder climates. If you are looking for small crinum to grow or hybridize, this is the one! DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a very tiny bulb but it is a large, blooming-size bulb at least 3 years old and about 1/2 - 1" in diameter which should bloom in 3 years. The roots are well developed so it should transplant easily. Bulbs will be freshly dug and shipped bare root. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.
