After a motorcycle accident, a young woman (Marilyn Chambers) receives an experimental skin graft. When the procedure goes awry, she grows a vicious appendage under her armpit, develops a hunger for human blood and spreads a rabies-like epidemic. This destructive virus rages through the population, turning normal people into out-of-control killers, all presented with gory and bizarre imagery. This was the second major release for Canada's horror bad boy, writer-director David Cronenberg, and in many respects, seems a lot like a bigger-budget remake of his first film Shivers. Rabid is downright silly at times, thanks to the poker-faced delivery by Frank Moore as Chambers' befuddled boyfriend and Howard Ryshpan as the experimenting surgeon. However, Cronenberg fans will most definitely want to check out this early work, particularly as many of the themes used here continue to crop up throughout much of his later career. Joe Silver, as another doctor, delivers a nice performance and look for a host of familiar Canadian faces (Miguel Fernandes, Louis Negin and others) in bit parts.
