Description: Vintage flag in great condition, an early thirteen-star flag with a medallion star pattern. The thirteen-star medallion pattern is among the most attractive and rare of the thirteen-star patterns. Of the thirteen-star antique flags that come to market only 20% are the thirteen-star medallion pattern. The thirteen-star medallion pattern is generally encountered in flags dating to the Centennial, dating to just after Civil War and into the early 1900s. This flag is approximately 110-125 years old. This flag is small scale (24” x 36”), partially machine-sewn, 13 starflags made between approximately 1896 and the 1915’s. The stars were sewn with the zigzag machine stitch, which was first attempted to be patented for use on flags in 1892, but can be seen on the very rarest of occasions just before that. It was, however, not commonly used until a couple of years thereafter. It then became the most common way to apply stars and remained so until WWII (U.S. involvement 1941-45). The wool stripes are individually cut and machine sewn together, the wool canton is machine sewn to the stripes, and the cotton twill hoist is machine sewn to both the stripes and canton. More specifically, the stripes, the canton, and the hoist are joined via treadle stitching. Prior to Singer’s introductionof the electric sewing machine, flag makers using machine stitching had to place each star on the canton, fold its edges under, pump a treadle machine—and while doing all of this—properly move both the star and canton through it. Because of these difficulties associated with early sewing machines, until 1885, stars were commonly applied by hand. This flag is small in size for a piece-and-sewn flag, this adds considerably to its appeal, as it can be easily displayed. Condition Report: This flag exhibits some very minor mouthing, some staining, and a few small tears. But overall, this is abeautifully preserved example for this era.
