Description: Easton Press leather edition of Stephen E. Ambrose and David Brinkley's "Witness to America: An Illustrated Documentary History of the United States from the Revolution to Today," a COLLECTOR'S edition, Period Photographs and Maps, published in 2001. Bound in deep hunter green leather, the book has camel tan moire silk end leaves, hubbed spine, satin book marker, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. "Witness" is a very thick compendium of our nation's history from its inception to the early 21st century. The live history is narrated through first person accounts, culled from essays, diaries, newspaper articles and speeches of the day. The book begins with "Mohawks Spill Tea in Boston Harbor" and other chapters in the "Coming of the Revolution" include John Adams Journeys to the Continental Congress, Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death, Adams Nominates Washington as Commander in Chief, A Shot Is Fired That Is Heard Around the World, and Jefferson Writes the Declaration of Independence. In Chapter 17, Mrs. Samuel Harrison Smith wrote about Jefferson: "Jefferson was a widower when he began his eight years in the White House in 1801. Tall, loosely built, rather carelessly dressed, informal of manner, full of endless frank, entertaining, shrewd talk, he impressed many observers as lacking in dignity. But his unaffected simplicity was actually one of the virtues of as true a gentleman as ever occupied the presidential chair." Chapter 32 is entitled: "Rebecca Felton Describes Country Life in Georgia." Chapter 43 is entitled: "The Reverend Mr. Walsh Inspects a Slave ship." Chapter 49 described "Trading Furs on the Northwest Coast." Chapter 56 describes the 500 American settlers who entered California in 1846. The group originated in a group of farmers in Springfield, Illinois, led by Jacob DONNER and James Reed. Of the original force of eighty-seven, only forty-eight reached California alive. The party often had nothing to eat but raw hides and they were often on the roof of the cabin to keep out of the snow. Chapter 53 was written by Mark Twain in "Roughing It" and details the PONY EXPRESS. "The rider's dress was thin and fitted close; he wore a roundabout and a skullcap and tucked his pantaloons into his boot top like a race rider. He carried no arms. . .his bag had business letters in it mostly. The stagecoach traveled about a hundred to a hundred and twenty-five miles a day, the pony rider about two hundred and fifty." Chapter 62 is entitled "Abraham Lincoln Is Nominated in the Wigwam." Chapter 67 is entitled: "President Lincoln Is Assassinated." Chapter 103 is entitled "Admiral Dewey Wins the Battle of Manila Bay." Chapter 123 is entitled: "Ernie Pyle Describes Hedgerow Fighting in Normandy." Chapter 130 is entitled: "Harry Truman Fires Douglas MacArthur." Chapter 137 is entitled "John F. Kennedy Delivers His Inaugural Address." Chapter 149 is entitled: "Neil Armstrong Reminisces About His Moon Walk." Chapter 163 is entitled: "General Norman Schwarzkopf On Victory in Warfare." Chapter 166 is entitled: "Educating the Generation Called 'X'." David Brinkley and Stephen Ambrose are among the most distinguished in the field. 605 FOLIO-SIZED pages, including Acknowledgements, Bibliography, and an Index---a true COFFEE TABLE book!
