Description: Entitled "Two Medusa on the Beach", this1970 hand colored lithograph is by the celebrated Russian/American Neo-Romantic painter, printmaker, and stage designer Eugene Berman (1899-1972) who was inspired to create, a series of imaginary archaeological artifacts of Medusa, once priestess to Athena, who was cursed with hair of slithering snakes after breaking her oath of celibacy with the sea god Poseidon. Measuring 15 3/4" x 21 3/4" image, 20" x 28" full deckle edge sheet, this lithograph is signed in pencil lower right, and numbered 77/80 lower left. It has never been framed and is in excellent condition with no holes, tears, stains or toning. Please note slight curls in the paper at upper corners are greatly exaggerated in the photo by the angle of the late afternoon sunlight and they would lie perfectly flat under a mat..Works by this artist can be found in the collections of many major museums including:The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; National Gallery of Art: Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC: Art Institute of Chicago; Tate Gallery, London, etc. Eugene Berman was born in Russia and was well known for Baroque stage set designs, most notably for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Berman helped lead the Neo-Romantic artists in France, defending abstract movements including Cubism and Futurism. Berman received his art education in Germany, Switzerland, anf France. His first exhibition in America was held at Julian Levy Art Gallery in New York. Berman was a war refugee in 1935 and moved to New York City, and eventually Los Angeles. He designed sets for hundreds of Metropolitan Opera performances and European Opera companies, including set designs for Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, and Othello. Berman retired in Rome in 1957.
