They appear at the top left and top right of this impressive souvenir sheet. The central joined pair shows the panorama of the Mahalangur Range when Mount Makala (Cho Oyu) is viewed from a Mountain Flight. In the center of this joined pair, just to the right of the vertical perforations, is majestic Mount Everest, the world's highest peak at 8,850m = 29,035 feet. Cho-oyu is the world's 6th highest peak. In 1952, (Sir) Edmund Hilary of New Zealand, with his guide, Tensing, and a party of other Sherpa guides, made the first northwest face reconnaisance of Mount Cho-Oyu. They would be the first to conquer Mount Everest** the following year. 19th October 1954 witnessed the first ascent of Cho-Oyu. More than a dozen successful (and some unsuccessful) attempts have been made to ascend Cho-Oyu since 1954, resulting in the deaths of some climbers. The lower left and lower right stamps of the souvenir sheet depict HILLARY PEAK (7,681m = 24,963ft) and TENSING PEAK (7,916m = 25,727ft), named by the Nepalese Government in 2014, in honor of these two intrepid mountaineers.
