Description: Pre Civil War political button for the visit of LAJOS KOSSUTH, the Governor of Hungary and leader of the Hungarian independence movement. He arrived in America on the USS Mississippi in 1851 and made numerous speeches around the country. He was hailed by many as the "George Washington of Hungary". Kossuth returned to Europe in 1852 and continued to fight for Hungary while in exile. Albert's UU-127. Backmark reads " O. W. MINARD - - - WATERBURY - - - H. W. HAYDEN'S PATENT 1851 ".
