Individuals are identified are JENNIE ROODHOUSE and CYNTHIA (Cinthe) LAKE. In one of the card images, you will find Cynthia's Father as well. There was at one time, history records that in this little Northwestern Michigan township, was a blossoming Black American population. It was short lived though. NO KNOW NEGATIVES! Photographer UNK... Additional Info: At Joyfield Cemetery, a historical marker in the cemetery recognizes its connection to the area's first African American landowners. Some additional interesting information states that African American history in Joyfield Township, Michigan, includes the first family of color to homestead in Benzie County, and the first cemetery in the township: William Davis In 1863, William Davis filed for a homestead claim on 160 acres of land in Joyfield Township. Davis was the son of a Scots-Irish planter and his Black mistress. He and his family were loggers and farmers. After his daughter died, Davis sold five acres of land to the township to create Joyfield Cemetery, the first in the township. Joseph Brand Davis Joseph was the son of William Davis. He built a log house and barn on his homestead, and donated two acres of land to the Reorganized Church of the Latter-Day Saints to build a church that was open to people of color and Indigenous people. Joseph died in 1915 and was buried in Joyfield Cemetery. David Imes Born free in Pennsylvania around 1840, Imes served in the Civil War as a Private in the 5th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment. After the war, he moved to Joyfield Township, married Emaline, and filed for a homestead claim. Lastly, the African American population in Joyfield Township, Michigan today is 0%.
