SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH BROADWAY CAST - MAGAZINE PHOTOGRAPH SIGNED CIRCA 1960 CO-SIGNED BY: ELIA KAZAN, GERALDINE PAGE - HFSID 182130 SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH BROADWAY CAST: GERALDINE PAGE and ELIA KAZAN Both sign an ad for the theater version of Sweet Bird of Youth, in which Page starred and for which Kazan won a Tony as Director. Magazine Photograph signed: "Geraldine Page", and "Elia Kazan", 1 page, 5¾x9 overall, image 5¾x7¼ (one surface). Circa May 1960. Page advertising Sweet Bird of Youth, "Direct From 11 Months on Broadway", at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. for two weeks (May 9-May 21, 1960). Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth had been presented at the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway from March 10, 1959-January 30, 1960. The play was directed by Elia Kazan, who was nominated for a 1960 Tony Award for Best Director, and starred Geraldine Page as Princess Kosmonopolis and Rip Torn, Page's future husband, as Tom Junior. Torn was nominated for a 1960 Tony Award as Best Featured Actor in a Play and won the 1959 Theatre World Award for his role in this play. Also pictured is Sidney Blackmer, who co-starred as Boss Finley. Actress GERALDINE PAGE (1924-1987) took home the 1985 Best Actress Academy Award for The Trip to Bountiful after being nominated for Oscars seven times: for Best Actress for Summer and Smoke (1961), Sweet Bird of Youth (1962) and Interiors (1978) and for Best Supporting Actress honors for Hondo (1953, her debut film), You're a Big Boy Now (1966), Pete 'n' Tillie (1972) and The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984). Page, who had begun her acting career as a stage actress, had received raves for her performance in the off-Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke, and began her film career the following year. She also won two Emmy Awards for her portrayals of Truman Capote's eccentric mother in A Christmas Memory (1967) and The Thanksgiving Visitor (1969). Page was married to actor Rip Torn from 1961 until her death in 1987. In addition to making his mark on film history directing such masterpieces as Gentleman's Agreement, A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront and East of Eden, each of which earned him an Oscar nomination, ELIA KAZAN (1909-2003) also made a dubious mark with his involvement in the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC)'s anti-Communist witch-hunt of the 1950s; his decision to name alleged industry Communists earned him the ire of many of his peers. He won the Oscar twice and in 1999 received an honorary Academy Award "In appreciation of a long, distinguished and unparalleled career during which he has influenced the very nature of filmmaking through his creation of cinematic masterpieces." The award divided the Hollywood community between those who supported the decision, maintaining that the director's body of work made him worthy, and those who didn't, maintaining that Kazan's off-screen activities amounted to a betrayal of his peers, thus making him an unfit award recipient. Lightly creased. Defects from original negative have reproduced at background. Fine condition.
