He attended Fagin's School for Drama and gained experience in stock productions before appearing on Broadway in the play "Hats Off to Ice" (1944 to 1946). Campbell marked his motion picture debut in the John Garfield film "The Breaking Point" (1950) and enjoyed a lengthy career being cast in memorable supporting parts, usually of villainous or cunning nature in both features and B-movies. On occasion he found lead roles of substance, notably as Whit Whittier in "Cell 2455 Death Row" (1955). Other films of note include "Love Me Tender" (1956) with Elvis Presley, "Man in the Vault" (1956), "The Naked and the Dead" (1958) with Cliff Robertson, Roger Corman's "The Young Racers" (1963), Francis Ford Coppola's "Dementia 13" (1963) and "Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte" (1964) with Bette Davis & Olivia de Havilland. He had a featured part as Jerry Austin in the TV series "Cannonball" (1958 to 1959), but will perhaps best be remembered by television audiences for his roles in the series "Star Trek", (as Trelane in "The Squire of Gothos" and Koloth in "The Trouble with Tribbles"). Campbell repeated the part of Koloth in a 1994 episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".
