President Roosevelt rejected the M1892 bayonet because it was thought of as being too short for the M1903 rifle. The M1905 was a longer version and it also incorporated a mechanism for locking the bayonet to the scabbard. It also was designed with a screw to hold on the grips instead of rivets. Two manufacturers manufactured the bayonet - Rock Island Arsenal and Springfield Armory. Overall, this bayonet is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with average spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have light handling marks and the color has turned a dark patina color. The one (1x) escutcheon screw securely fastens the grip panels. It has light tool marks and a fairly strong slot. The grips have chips, compressions and drag lines. The wood feels a little gritty. It has darkened with age. The spine has nicks and dings, the sides and fullers have light oxidation. There are no nicks or dings on the blade edge and the blade has its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a semi-sharp straight point. The remaining finish has started to turn a darker patina color. The left ricasso is marked "R.I.A." / flaming bomb, "1917". The right ricasso is marked "US" over the serial number "283852". This scabbard is in Poor - Fair condition, mainly due to its torn/missing built-in frog. The leather frog loop is missing and only a piece of leather remains, it has cracked and the remaining stitching is intact. The metal bracket is still attached and has oxidized. The locket and chape have oxidized. They are securely attached to the leather body. However, there is a 1.25" crack where the chape meets the leather, otherwise the body has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. There are light scrapes and some finish still remains. The locket is marked "GF" within in an oval. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your WWI rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
